The New York Yankees have made a significant addition to their roster, reaching an agreement on a free agent contract with outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger, sources tell ESPN. The deal is for five years and $162.5 million, sources tell ESPN. There are opt-outs after the second and third season, a $20M signing bonus and a full no-trade clause.
Bellinger, one of the most versatile and accomplished players on the market, gives the Yankees a much-needed blend of left-handed power, defensive flexibility, and postseason experience. While the financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, the move signals New York’s intent to aggressively upgrade its lineup and defensive profile heading into the upcoming season.
Bellinger, 29, is best known for his standout years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he emerged as one of baseball’s brightest stars. He was named the 2019 National League MVP after hitting .305 with 47 home runs, 115 RBIs, and elite defense in the outfield and at first base. That season cemented him as one of the most complete players in the sport.
After battling injuries and inconsistency in subsequent years, Bellinger revitalized his career, reestablishing himself as a productive everyday player and proving his value on both sides of the ball. His ability to play center field, corner outfield, and first base gives the Yankees critical roster flexibility.
Bellinger’s left-handed swing is tailor-made for Yankee Stadium, particularly the short porch in right field. The Yankees have long prioritized left-handed power to balance their lineup, and Bellinger immediately fills that need while also improving the team’s overall athleticism and defense.
Defensively, he brings Gold Glove-caliber ability, capable of stabilizing center field or providing elite defense at first base depending on roster construction and health. That versatility could allow the Yankees to mix and match lineups more freely throughout the season.
This signing addresses multiple needs at once: offense, defense, and lineup balance. Bellinger’s presence should take pressure off the middle of the order while giving the Yankees a reliable everyday option who has already proven he can perform on the game’s biggest stages, including a World Series championship.
As the Yankees continue shaping their roster for a deep postseason run, adding a former MVP with bounce-back momentum represents a calculated and potentially high-impact move.
More details are expected to emerge as the deal becomes official, but one thing is clear: Cody Bellinger is headed to the Bronx, and the Yankees just became a more complete team.
