Breaking: Cal Raleigh Sets New Single-Season HR Record for Catchers

Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh etched his name into baseball history on Sunday afternoon, blasting his 49th home run of the season in an 11–4 win over the Oakland Athletics. With that swing, Raleigh officially surpassed Salvador Perez’s 2021 mark of 48, becoming the all-time single-season home run leader among primary catchers.

The record-breaking shot came in the 6th inning off Oakland reliever Mason Miller, a towering drive into the right-field seats that sent T-Mobile Park into a frenzy. Fans immediately rose to their feet, showering Raleigh with applause as his teammates greeted him at home plate.

Raleigh, nicknamed “Big Dumper” by Mariners fans, has put together one of the most powerful campaigns ever by a backstop. Known for his clutch homers and leadership behind the plate, he has evolved into Seattle’s most reliable bat in the heart of their order.

This milestone cements him among the game’s great power-hitting catchers, alongside legends like Mike Piazza, Johnny Bench, and Jorge Posada. Unlike many sluggers, Raleigh has delivered his home runs while maintaining heavy defensive responsibilities—calling games, handling a young pitching staff, and throwing out runners.

Seattle’s win over Oakland keeps them in the thick of the playoff race, and Raleigh’s historic blast adds momentum to a season where the club is eyeing a return to October baseball. Manager Scott Servais praised his catcher after the game:

“He’s the heart and soul of this team. To do what he’s doing, in this ballpark, at this position—it’s incredible. Mariners fans should never take this for granted.”

With more than a month left in the regular season, the 27-year-old Raleigh isn’t just breaking records—he’s setting a new standard. If he continues his pace, he could push the mark well past 50, a number once thought unreachable for a full-time catcher.

For Seattle, Raleigh’s bat might just be the difference between staying in the Wild Card hunt or chasing down the AL West crown.
