With the New York Yankees once again falling short in October, speculation is growing that manager Aaron Boone could be on the way out. Despite leading the team to seven straight postseason appearances, Boone’s 2–9 record in playoff series and repeated bullpen blunders have pushed fan frustration to a boiling point.
If Yankees ownership decides to make a change, several intriguing names — both inside and outside the organization — could be in play. Here’s a look at the top candidates who could replace Boone in the Bronx.
A fan favorite and Yankees legend, Don Mattingly would instantly energize the Bronx. Currently serving as the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, Mattingly has extensive managerial experience from his time with the Dodgers and Marlins, leading both clubs to playoff appearances.
Known for his calm demeanor and strong communication skills, Mattingly commands respect from players and fans alike. His return to New York would be a full-circle moment — and perhaps the jolt of nostalgia and leadership the organization needs.
If the Yankees want a proven winner, Bruce Bochy would instantly command attention. The three-time World Series champion with the San Francisco Giants and 2023 champion with the Texas Rangers is one of the most accomplished managers of his era.
Bochy’s leadership style — calm, confident, and tactical — has thrived in high-pressure postseason environments. While he’s currently under contract with Texas, the Yankees could be tempted to make an aggressive move if Bochy were to consider another challenge before retiring for good.
Currently the bench coach for the Yankees, Brad Ausmus would be the most seamless internal transition if Boone were let go. A former big-league catcher and ex-manager of the Tigers and Angels, Ausmus brings a cerebral, detail-oriented approach and is already familiar with the team’s day-to-day operations.
Ausmus’s analytical background and even-keeled demeanor could appeal to the Yankees’ front office. He’s the quiet favorite if the organization wants continuity without a full overhaul.
A return of Buck Showalter would bring a mix of irony and intrigue. The former Yankees manager helped lay the groundwork for the team’s late-’90s dynasty before being replaced by Joe Torre. Showalter remains one of the sharpest tactical minds in baseball and has experience managing in the biggest markets.
If ownership wants an experienced hand who can bring structure and accountability, Buck could be the short-term answer.
Another veteran with credibility, Bob Melvin is respected across baseball for his communication skills, in-game strategy, and ability to maximize talent on any budget. Now with the Giants, Melvin previously led the Athletics and Padres to multiple playoff appearances, earning three Manager of the Year awards along the way.
Willie Randolph – Former Yankees coach and Mets manager, a respected baseball lifer with deep New York roots.
Mark DeRosa – MLB Network analyst and Team USA manager at the 2023 WBC, seen as an emerging managerial candidate league-wide.
Aaron Boone’s future remains uncertain, but if the Yankees decide to move on, they’ll have no shortage of capable replacements. The next Yankees manager will face the same immense pressure Boone has: win a World Series or face the wrath of the Bronx.
The Yankees have built a culture of consistency — but after another October collapse, change may finally be coming.
