The Los Angeles Dodgers may already be the most loaded roster in baseball and yet, that hasn’t stopped speculation that they could be preparing their biggest move yet.
During the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida, rumors swirled throughout baseball circles that the Dodgers were exploring a blockbuster trade for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. While those talks cooled as the meetings concluded, the idea of Skubal in Dodger blue is far from dead.
In fact, ESPN insiders believe it may only be delayed — not dismissed.
Detroit president of baseball operations Scott Harris fueled the speculation when he stated publicly that there were no “untouchables” on the Tigers’ roster.
That comment immediately set off alarms across the league.
Few teams are even capable of entering a Skubal bidding war. The Dodgers are one of them — armed with:
Elite prospects
Young, controllable pitchers
Financial flexibility
A win-now mandate
While Detroit ultimately held onto its ace through the winter, executives around the league never stopped believing that Skubal could be the biggest name moved at the 2026 trade deadline.
ESPN insider Jesse Rogers believes Los Angeles is the most logical landing spot — even if it means acquiring Skubal as a pure rental.
“For several reasons — from the rarity of a three-peat to the potential for a new economic landscape starting in 2027 — the Dodgers will surely push all their chips to the middle of the table in their quest for another title,” Rogers wrote.
“They can even afford to trade for Skubal as a rental if the move leads them to a third straight championship, whereas just about any other team would need to immediately sign him to a long-term deal in order to justify giving up the prospects it will undoubtedly take to land a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner.”
In short: the Dodgers are uniquely positioned to overpay — and not care.
After winning his first Cy Young Award in 2024, Skubal somehow took things to another level in 2025.

Skubal isn’t just an ace — he’s a series-defining pitcher, the type who changes October matchups and neutralizes elite lineups.
Add that arm to a Dodgers rotation already built for postseason dominance, and the margin between Los Angeles and the rest of the league grows even wider.
If Detroit hangs around the playoff picture, Skubal likely stays put.
But if the Tigers drift out of contention?
That’s when the Dodgers loom large.
As Rogers noted:
“If the Tigers fall out of the race, L.A. simply makes too much sense as a landing spot for Skubal — that is assuming he’s not traded in the coming weeks.”
Los Angeles wouldn’t need Skubal for six months.
They’d need him for October.
And that’s where the Dodgers consistently separate themselves from the field: they acquire players not to build rosters — but to finish championships.
A Skubal trade would not be cheap.
Detroit would demand:
Multiple top-tier prospects
MLB-ready pitching
Long-term upside
The Dodgers are one of the very few organizations that can meet that price without crippling their future.
For a franchise chasing history — and potentially a three-peat — that cost becomes easier to justify.
The Winter Meetings may have ended quietly, but the Skubal-to-Dodgers rumor refuses to disappear for one simple reason:
It makes too much sense.
If Tarik Skubal is still wearing a Tigers uniform in July and Detroit isn’t contending, expect the Dodgers to be front and center — ready to push their chips in once again.
Because in Los Angeles, championships aren’t hoped for.
