The Minnesota Twins are turning to a familiar face to lead their clubhouse once again. The organization announced today that they have hired Derek Shelton as their new manager, bringing him back to Minneapolis where his major league managerial journey first began.
Shelton, 54, previously served as the Twins’ bench coach from 2017 to 2019, working under both Paul Molitor and Rocco Baldelli. During that time, he developed a strong reputation within the organization for his communication skills, analytical approach, and player relationships — qualities that helped guide the Twins through one of their most successful stretches in recent memory.
After leaving Minnesota following the 2019 season, Shelton took over as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he spent six seasons before being dismissed in May of 2025. His record in Pittsburgh — 306–440 (.410) — reflects the challenges of guiding a rebuilding franchise with one of baseball’s youngest rosters and smallest payrolls.
Despite those struggles, Shelton earned praise across the league for maintaining a positive clubhouse culture and developing young talent such as Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz. Twins President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey cited Shelton’s leadership and familiarity with the organization as key factors in the hire.
“Derek understands what it takes to build a winning culture here,” Falvey said in a team statement. “He knows our players, our system, and our expectations. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to the Twins family.”
Shelton replaces Rocco Baldelli, who was relieved of his duties following the 2025 season after the team failed to reach the postseason for the third consecutive year.
For Shelton, the move represents a full-circle moment — a return to the organization that helped prepare him for his first managerial opportunity. Now, with a more experienced roster and a front office committed to contending, Shelton will have a chance to prove he can win at the highest level.
“I’ve always loved my time in Minnesota,” Shelton said. “This organization and this fanbase mean a lot to me. I’m excited to get back to work and help bring another division title — and hopefully more — to Target Field.”
The Twins are expected to formally introduce Shelton in a press conference later this week.
