San Diego Padres Hire New Manager

The San Diego Padres have officially ushered in a new era of leadership, announcing that they have agreed to terms with former pitcher Craig Stammen on a three-year contract to become the club’s next manager.

“Craig has been a leader in every clubhouse he’s been a part of,” the organization said in a team statement. “We are confident in his ability to guide this team forward, develop our young talent, and compete for a championship.”

Stammen, 40, spent nearly two decades in professional baseball, including five seasons with the Padres from 2017–2021. Known for his durability, consistency, and presence in the clubhouse, he was often described by teammates and coaches as an extension of the coaching staff long before his playing career ended.

Over his 12-year Major League career, Stammen compiled a 3.66 ERA across 562 appearances with the Washington Nationals and San Diego Padres. He retired in 2023, spending the past year working in player development and serving as a special assistant to the Padres’ front office.

Stammen steps into the job at a critical time. The Padres boast a roster featuring stars like Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts, but are seeking greater consistency and postseason results.

General Manager A.J. Preller expressed confidence in Stammen’s ability to elevate the team:

“Craig knows what it means to wear a Padres uniform. He brings integrity, strategy, and a true love for the game. We believe he’s the right leader to help us reach the next level.”

Stammen’s three-year contract runs through the 2028 season, signaling a long-term commitment to stability and development.

With Craig Stammen at the helm, the Padres are betting on leadership, experience, and familiarity to guide them into a new chapter. Fans at Petco Park can expect a manager who knows the organization inside and out — and is determined to deliver the championship San Diego has long awaited.
