New York Yankees

Facing Logan Webb, the Yankees proved they’re still the league’s best offense

Against a perennial ace, the Bronx Bombers cruised to a lopsided Opening Day win.

Baseball season is officially here, and the New York Yankees are still the same offensive juggernaut. While the train staggered against the Blue Jays in the Postseason, the New York offense still produced a historic year in 2025. Kicking off the 2026 season in a very pitcher-friendly ballpark, the Yankees didn’t waste any time getting to one of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues.

Seven runs against Webb

Logan Webb made his fourth consecutive Opening Day start, coming off another strong season as the Giants’ ace. Making all 34 starts, Webb held down a 3.22 ERA over 207 innings. He struck out a whopping 224 batters, and walked only 5.4% of the total hitters he faced.

The moral of the story is that the Yankees didn’t face any pitcher— they faced a premier talent. Webb finished in fourth place for the NL Cy Young award, and was named to Team USA to make a pair of starts in the World Baseball Classic.

Despite the tough opponent, the Yankees’ matched their runs-per-game average in just the second inning. The Yankees scored five runs in the blink of an eye, the most Webb had allowed in a single inning since 2023.

Giancarlo Stanton recorded New York’s first hit of the season, singling to center to kickstart the offense. Webb then hit Jazz Chisholm Jr. with a pitch, setting up the bottom of the order to cash in. Jose Caballero slashed a double down the line at 102.4 MPH, which scored the first run of the season.

Ryan McMahon stepped up next and hit a dribbler up the middle which scored a pair. The big blow came at the hands of Trent Grisham, who delivered a two-run triple to Triples Alley in right-center field at Oracle Park. The blast clocked in at 105.7 MPH off of Grisham, stunning an eager San Francisco crowd.

In the fifth inning, the Yankees’ middle of the order was right back at it. Two singles on two pitches filled the corners in a flash, before Giancarlo Stanton laced a 114.4 MPH single to score the Yankees’ sixth run. Right after, a seventh run came in to score on a throwing error by Willy Adames.

Logan Webb was chased from the game after the fifth inning. Long relief hybrid arm Keaton Winn came on to face the explosive Yankees offense. For Webb, it was by far the worst Opening Day performance of his career. This was the final line for Webb

More of the same from New York

This Yankees outburst was surprising against such a talented pitcher, however, it was simply an extension of what they did in 2025. The Yankees led all of baseball with 849 runs in the regular season, while pacing teams in homers and slugging percentage.

The Yankees 274 home runs in 2025 were the second-most by a team in a season since 2019. Only the 2023 Atlanta Braves— a lineup that featured Ronald Acuña Jr, Matt Olson, Austin Riley, and Michael Harris II all at peak form— slugged more long balls

The biggest surprise in the box score last night has to be Aaron Judge. The Yankee captain punched out four times in the game, continuing a frustrating conclusion of the World Baseball Classic.

Despite Judge’s struggles, the Yankees still thrived, with seemingly every one of his teammates finding their way on base. This game was a testament to the caliber of team that the Yankees can be, even with Judge struggling.

Needing offense more than ever

Now more than ever, the Yankees need to be the offensive powerhouse that we saw last night. This is because the AL East division was easily the most active in the offseason. Dylan Cease, Pete Alonso and Ranger Suarez joined the division, in what looks to be a four-team race.

Zooming in even more, the Yankees are currently starting the year without two key starters in Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón. Will Warren will be counted on to handle the fifth starter duties, and presumably, the offense will be leaned on heavily

The strong Opening Day outing for Yankees is a great early sign for their competitive chances in the AL East. At their peak, this is a deadly offensive team that racks up strikeouts throughout the rotation and the bullpen.

For MLB fans, opening the year with the league’s best offense was certainly a fun idea from the scheduling crew. After an off-day tomorrow, the Yankees will look to continue mashing in San Francisco. They’ll face Robbie Ray on Saturday, and close out the series against Tyler Mahle on Sunday.
