REPORT: PAUL SKENES LINKED TO YANKEES—BUT THE PIRATES’ ACE FIRES BACK

Rumors swirled across social media this week after a speculative report claimed that Pittsburgh Pirates superstar pitcher Paul Skenes secretly wants out of Pittsburgh and dreams of joining the New York Yankees.

According to the report, an unnamed teammate supposedly told a reporter that Skenes “wants to play for the Yankees all the time.”

The story blew up instantly because when the Yankees are mentioned, everything blows up instantly.

But Skenes wasted no time shutting it all down.

Skenes Responds: “My Goal Is to Win With the Pirates”

Shortly after the rumor began circulating, Skenes addressed it head-on. His response wasn’t vague. It wasn’t passive. It was emphatic:

“I saw the tweet and didn’t think much of it. I got some texts about it. You know, I’m on the Pirates, my goal is to win with the Pirates. I love the city of Pittsburgh and the fans are hungry to have a winner in the city of Pittsburgh. I want to be a part of the group that does that. Everyone outside of Pittsburgh thinks we’re supposed to lose. I want to be a part of the group that changes that.”

This is exactly the kind of fire Pittsburgh fans already adore about him.

He didn’t dodge. He didn’t dance around it. He doubled down on the mission he’s become the face of: transforming the Pirates into winners.

Let’s be honest: if you’re making a list of franchises players supposedly wish they could join, the Yankees are always going to be at the top.

Big payroll. Bright lights. Baseball royalty.

And when a generational talent like Paul Skenes is involved—someone who looks like a future perennial Cy Young candidate—you’re going to get the perfect storm for clicks, speculation, and misinformation.

Add in the fact that the Pirates have historically struggled to keep superstar talent long-term, and you get a rumor mill ready to explode.

Still, this one never passed the smell test.

Skenes’ statement lines up with everything he has said and done since arriving in MLB:

  • He consistently praises the city and fanbase.

  • He embraces the underdog mentality.

  • He talks openly about wanting to change the franchise’s culture.

  • He’s shown zero signs of wanting out.

In fact, his passion for turning Pittsburgh into a powerhouse is something fans have clung to—a rare beacon of hope in a baseball town desperate for resurgence.

His message wasn’t just damage control. It was a mission statement.

Paul Skenes isn’t daydreaming about pinstripes.
He’s wearing black and gold—and he plans to bring winning baseball back to Pittsburgh.

Unless someone can produce this “unnamed teammate,” the story looks like exactly what Skenes treated it as: noise.

And if his words are any indication, Pirates fans should feel better today than they did yesterday.

Because their ace isn’t running from the challenge, he’s embracing it.
