A home run in your first career at-bat is an incredibly fun story. This extremely rare milestone is shared between the likes of Aaron Judge, Jason Heyward, Jorge Soler, Spencer Steer, and as of today, Joshua Báez.
Yet one home run was clearly not enough for the Cardinals’ rookie right fielder.
Joshua Báez made MLB history earlier today by hitting three home runs in his Major League debut. Against the rival Cubs, Báez pulled off the performance to remember from the 2026 MLB season.
Facing Matthew Boyd, Joshua Báez mashed a 449-foot moonshot to center field on the first pitch he saw as a Cardinal. In his next at-bat, he took Boyd yard once more, this time pulling a changeup 382 feet down the line. Two innings later, he mashed Boyd’s slider 368 feet the opposite way for his third home run on the day.

While Boyd became a trivia question, Báez did something no rookie had ever accomplished in their debut. He and St. Louis rolled to a well-earned 8-4 victory at Wrigley Field.
The immediate question: Is this the greatest MLB debut in the history of baseball?
It absolutely is, and there’s little question.
Comparing Joshua Báez’s day to the great debuts
There is very little reasoning required to back Báez’s debut as the greatest debut performance of all time. Even dating back to the early 1900s, no performance can truly compare to what the Cards’ youngster pulled off.
Not only did Báez become the first player to homer three times in his MLB debut, he pulled off the feat in his first three consecutive plate appearances. Only in his fourth plate appearance did Colin Rea forced Báez to line out to left field.
In addition, his first-inning home run came on the first pitch he saw. He became the 33rd player to ever accomplish that, but it doesn’t end there. His first-pitch blast traveled a soaring 449 feet, which qualifies as the farthest-tracked first pitch home run in baseball history.
Aside from the metrics themselves, the circumstances only boost the case for Báez. His grand day came in the midst of the Cardinals’ rebound year and push for the Postseason. It also came against their storied rival Chicago Cubs.

No blowout, no mop-up position player pitching. Just pure electricity in one of St. Louis’s bigger games of the season. While he may have single-handedly earned a win for his ball club, he also earned a much bigger title:
The greatest Major League debut in baseball HISTORY.
