There have been many outstanding players with huge upside that have come through Major League baseball, but there may be one in the present moment that could potentially be among the best ever. That’s a huge amount of pressure for a 19 year old, but the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Konnor Griffin is an entirely different animal.
Griffin, who is the #1 prospect in 2026, has the most hype of any player in recent memory. FanGraphs recently released their Top 70 prospects, and Griffin stood head and shoulders above the other players in this class. “Griffin is a freaky five-tool superstar with big power and enough contact ability to weaponize it. He’s also incredibly fast and has quickly developed into a plus shortstop. He’s about to be one of the best young players in the game,” FanGraphs said of Griffin.
FanGraphs went on to compare Griffin to some of the most talented young players in the game: “He’s a franchise-altering entity whose talent rivals that of Bobby Witt Jr., a young, level-headed Hanley Ramirez, or a faster Carlos Correa. The rate at which Griffin has become this good is astonishing.”
Although Pirates’ manager Don Kelly has said that Griffin making the Opening Day roster is a “big ask” due to him only having taken a handful at-bats in Double A, his talent may be too much for the team to keep off the field.
“You know, I think it’s too early to really dive that deep into it,” Kelly said when asked if he believes Griffin will be on the Opening Day roster. “Really excited that he’s a Pirate…There’s a few balls that he hit that still haven’t landed. Really excited about what he brings. The energy, the ability that he’s shown to play shortstop.”
MLB Network’s Steve Phillips believes Griffin has what it takes to play at the highest level right now at only 19 years old. “I think he makes the team on Opening Day,” Phillips said recently. “I think it’s the right thing for the Pirates.”

Regardless of whether Griffin is the starting shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates when the team takes the field for Opening Day or not, he has an insanely bright future, and a few years from now, he could be one of the top players in all of baseball.
Players like Mike Trout, Byron Buxton, Wander Franco, Shohei Ohtani and Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. all had huge hype and were considered among the best prospects in modern day baseball history, but Konnor Griffin has all of the tools and maturity to surpass them all.
